About us
Čedo Komljenović, also known as Monty Shadow, was a creative visionary and artist. He left his mark not only as a world-famous photographer, but also within the spheres of journalism and design. He was born in Karlovac, Croatia, in 1939 and his talent and dedication to work quickly made him stand out among his peers. One of his greatest successes was the Symbol Magazine – an internationally renowned cultural publication brimming with interesting texts, critiques and stories on worldwide art, architecture, music and film.
This luxury monthly publication, printed in large format on finest paper, closely followed newest trends from the world of art, design, fashion, luxury cars, watches, jewellery, sports… It showcased most formidable international artists, successful entrepreneurs, top athletes and popular celebrities. Symbol Magazine stood out in its approach and style, establishing itself as an important source of inspiration and information for numerous art lovers. Vision and work of Čedo Komljenović inspired many, while his contributions to Symbol Magazine and art itself are valued and deeply cherished even today.
Čedo Komljenović’s close friend attorney Silvije Hraste, to whom Čedo left his publishing rights, decided to further pursue this vision. Together with his associates, Hraste embarked to revive and revamp the Magazine, now titled Symbol Croatia. The publication is issued quarterly and is bilingual in Croatian and English, all in order to make its contents accessible to a wider range of curios readers.
Our vision for the new Symbol is to make it a lead magazine in Croatia, which identifies true values and promotes top cultural, artistic and entrepreneurial talents. We aim to engage with our readers through informative and interesting stories that entice imagination, spark their interests in culture and art, and introduce them to superb entrepreneurial projects.
Project Symbol Croatia is backed up by company Zepter, Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb and Croatian Music Institute. Magazine’s chief editor is Mihovil Švigir, co-owner and main editor of the Jet-Set Magazine and the former issue of Croatian Playboy Magazine. Executive editor is Silvije Hraste. Magazine’s art director and designer is Igor Vranješ. We are very honoured to have Reiner Opoku on our team as the project’s art advisor.
Symbol Croatia is distributed through all of Zepter’s sales points, at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, Croatian Music Institute, Klovićevi Dvori Gallery and many other cultural establishments in Croatia.
