In the Beginning,There Was theKingdom

On the occasion of 1100 years of the Croatian kingdom, in Klovićevi Dvori from October, 2025, to February 15, 2026, you can view an exhibition on Croatian historical integrity.

The exhibition marking the 1100th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom, serving as the crown event of the jubilee year, is divided into thematic sections designed in line with the dominant historical, social, and cultural phenomena.

From hall to hall, the emphasis is placed on the legal and symbolic continuity of the kingdom, which allows us to follow the idea of statehood through the centuries — from the birth of the Croatian state and native rulers in the early Middle Ages, to the election of foreign dynasties in subsequent periods.

Announcing the exhibition, art historian Dino Milinović (head of the authorial team, which also includes historians Tomislav Galović and Trpimir Vedriš) wrote:

“The mythical status of the year 925, to which the exhibition refers, was confirmed by our ancestors a hundred years ago, when the thousandth anniversary of the kingdom was marked throughout the Croatian lands.

Not wanting to lag behind them, convinced that in an independent state — born of the sacrifice of all those who gave their lives for it — we have an additional reason, and an obligation, to once again recall the long tradition that draws strength deep from the piece of earth’s crust allotted to us, we invite you to be together the Guardians of Memory.

Our wish is that all visitors to the exhibition once again relive this challenging, often arduous, but persistent journey through more than a thousand years of history.
At the beginning of that path, there was — the kingdom.”

The curator of the exhibition is Iva Sudec Andreis, and the production is signed by Klovićevi dvori in co-organization with the Croatian State Archives in Zagreb, the Croatian History Museum in Zagreb, the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments in Split, and the National and University Library in Zagreb.
