Philip Zepter has left an indelible mark in the corporate world by creating a true business empire and a globally recognisable name. His path to worldwide success began with a vision that many regarded as a utopia.
– At the very beginning of my journey, I had nothing but intuition. I never listened to those who said I was crazy and would never succeed – Zepter points out.
His story is not just a story of business success but also about the significance of family ties, courage, philanthropy, support, and love. He is the man whose vision and tireless effort have culminated in a global brand, a name that is unquestioningly and inextricably linked to quality, luxury, and health in everybody’s mind.
Zepter’s empire, bolstered by the unwavering support of the three most important women in his life, continues to grow and inspire many, demonstrating that with a clear goal and hard work extraordinary feats are possible. This is the story of a man who not only managed to change his destiny but also inspire many others to strive for excellence and engage in humanitarian activity.
He was born as Milan Janković on November 23, 1950, in Bosanska Dubica, a small town where he finished high school. Afterwards, he decided to pursue economic studies at the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade, from where he successfully graduated.
He embarked on his professional journey as a sales manager at the international transport company “Transkop International” in 1976 where he gained invaluable experience in the field of international trade and logistics, laying the groundwork for his future career. Philip Zepter’s exceptional abilities and forward-thinking mindset quickly took centre stage in the corporate world, yet he yearned for more.
Two years later, he quit his job. He made the decision to join his wife, who was teaching children in Vienna, to brush up on his German skills, feel the “pulse of the West”, and embrace fresh challenges.

Going to Vienna was a brave move for young Philip. Immersed in the bustling business scene of the Austrian metropolis, he found himself in a thriving ecosystem that fostered innovation and entrepreneurship. He was captivated by the endless possibilities this city held and made a bold choice to settle down and nurture his entrepreneurial visions. With his deep understanding of economics and extensive background in international trade, he was able to effortlessly identify the opportunities that the market had to offer.
Founded in 1986 in Linz, the company “Zepter International” was born. With a clear vision in mind, he set out to revolutionize cooking by creating high-quality cookware that would bring a healthier way of preparing food to homes worldwide. This was more than just a business idea; it marked the inception of a profound philosophy of success.
With the establishment of Zepter International, Philip Zepter set the stage for what would become a global phenomenon. Stainless-steel cookware quickly became synonymous with healthy cooking because it preserves the natural flavours and nutrients of food, without relying on water, oil, or salt. It was a groundbreaking innovation that quickly gained worldwide recognition. Zepter’s products have set new standards, ensuring that customers are always getting the best.
– When I launched Zepter, my intention wasn’t merely to sell pots. I wanted to develop a food philosophy. I wanted to bring a specific style and quality of life to people. Every language has a variation of the phrase “you are what you eat.” That’s why I created a product that is revolutionary and that works. Evidence, studies, and scientific research support everything I say. Besides, for all my products, I’m always the one to take the first bite of the cherry. People trust me, which has helped me build trust with my customers.
The company rapidly diversified beyond high-end cookware, manufacturing and distributing medical devices and cosmetic products, but health remained its primary objective. Zepter’s philosophy embraces a holistic approach to health, addressing various facets of life, from nutrition and skin care to air and water quality.
– I believe that everyone deserves access to clean water and air, and healthy food, and our products provide exactly that. Products like Bioptron Hyperlight Therapy System, Edel Waser water purifier, and Therapy Air iOn air purification and ionization system are designed to improve consumers’ lives in a natural and effective manner. Everyone has the right to a healthy life – he argues.
Zepter’s products are more than just functional; they are also exquisite works of art. Despite his huge success and growing business empire, Zepter remains humble and down-to-earth. He emphasizes that he has never been involved in politics or sought favours from the government or institutions. He always relied on the quality of his products and his unique business model.
– I have unique products that really work. I have not and will not engage in politics – he states, stressing his commitment to transparency and ethical business practices.
In the cutthroat world of business where failings are unavoidable, Philip Zepter is not an exception.
– Of course, I had my fair share of failings; it would be strange if I didn’t, but I don’t pine over it – he states simply.
His philosophy is straightforward: don’t cry over spilled milk. This attitude has led him throughout his life and career, allowing him to learn from his mistakes and continually look ahead. He also does not believe in the statement “structure, diligence, and discipline pave the path to success” since he finds it to be rather vague. All that structure, diligence, and discipline are “hollow” without the most important thing – the final result.
– The result is what gives meaning to every effort and endeavour. Success is measured by tangible accomplishments, not just hard work and discipline. The results are the ultimate indicators of the efficiency and success of any venture – Zepter is categorical and very clear.
As a businessman, he has a reputation for driving a hard bargain, which is not surprising given his vast business experience.
– What I value most in doing business is trust. Without trust, there is no foundation for long-term success – he says.
Despite facing many hurdles, Zepter never considered luck to be a key factor. Instead, he focused on developing strong business connections and fostering trust. These were the principles that guided him in building his company.
– The path I took may have been hard, but each hurdle taught me a valuable lesson – he concludes.
They say that behind every successful man stands a successful woman, and that certainly rings true for Philip Zepter. He has been happily married to Madlena for over four decades; in her, he found his soulmate, who has supported him every step of the way. Their love story began in Belgrade in 1972, when they first crossed paths in the student library, where he was studying for an exam and she was working on her thesis. Philip was studying economics, while Madlena was enrolled in literature. A few years later, they tied the knot and made the decision to start a new chapter together in Austria in 1979.
Madlena is so much more than just Philip’s wife; she is also his trusted business partner. She has always been his go-to person, involved in both the company’s strategic planning and providing daily support in his personal life.
Philip frequently emphasises the profound impact Madlena has had on his life, acknowledging that, without her, he would probably never have seen any show or exhibition. His success in the business world, in turn, paved the way for her to pursue her passion for promoting culture and art. In 1999, she established Madlenianum, the first private opera house in Serbia and this region of Europe. This cultural centre has emerged as a powerful symbol of artistic creativity and cultural significance, attracting renowned artists from around the world.
– When you’re in business, everything revolves around work. Thanks to my wife, I’ve also discovered my passion for culture, and it’s understandable given that she took every last cent from me (laughs). She’s opening opera houses and museums… What can I do? I go to the opera, since I’ve already built it…Up to 12 million euros of our own funds have been invested in the Madlenianum, but it was well worth it. The Madlenianum has become a popular venue that attracts theatre afficionados of all ages, with an impressive repertoire that includes world-class musicals, operas, dramas, and ballet performances.
Philip also takes great pride in Madlena’s other endeavours:
– My wife launched numerous initiatives for the restoration and preservation of cultural heritage, which is a testament to her dedication and commitment not only to the arts but to the community as well. She also founded the Zepter museum, which serves as a cultural centre and gallery that promotes both contemporary and classical artists; she is the initiator of the European Literary Award, the mastermind and patron of the Artzept International Design Award, the sponsor of the Žensko pero and Dobričin prsten literary awards, as well as the founder and owner of Serbia’s first auction house, Madl’Art. And that’s not all —not by a long shot! There is also the Zepter Book World, a bookstore and publishing house. In addition, since last year, Serbia and Belgrade have been richer for yet another museum, the Museum of Antiquities, housed at the Madlena Palace of Arts.
Her projects stand as exquisite memorials to her to passionate advocacy for a world where art is accessible to all – Philip says proudly.
Philip and Madlena have been married for over 40 years and Emma, now 24, is their beloved adopted daughter who is truly the light of their lives.
– She entered our lives and our hearts on a December day in 2000 and effortlessly settled there, filling the space we didn’t know existed– he says with an overwhelming amount of affection in his voice.
In addition to Madlena and Emma, there is yet another woman who plays a pivotal role in the Zepter family empire. She is the daughter of Philip’s brother – Diana Zepter. She and her brother were raised by Philip and Madlena after their father made the decision to evacuate them to safety when the war broke out. Over time, Diana took on the key role in the company’s management, which she helped propel to even greater hights of success…
Philip is well known for his generosity and dedication to humanitarian efforts. The company frequently engages in charitable actions, contributing funds to healthcare institutions and backing projects that improve the quality of life of people worldwide. Philip is particularly committed to helping children and young people, as he believes that investing in them is crucial for the future. Zepter International is actively supporting them in pursuing their dreams through a whole range of initiatives.
One of the major initiatives supported by Zepter has been providing scholarships for talented students from all around the world. These scholarships give young people the opportunity to study at prominent universities, enabling them access to a more promising future. Zepter also partners with a wide range of schools and educational institutions, supplying the essential infrastructure and equipment needed for high-quality education.
Philip Zepter and his company make substantial contributions to the health sector. Donations made to hospitals, clinics, and research centres play a vital role in improving healthcare and discovering innovative approaches to disease treatment. Zepter’s Bioptron Hyperlight Therapy has gained widespread recognition in healthcare facilities worldwide for its ability to effectively treat a wide range of health issues, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for patients.
Madlena and Philip have launched many other projects together, showing that success is not just about business results but about benefiting society as a whole, or, to put it bluntly, not just about making money but about making the world a better place. Their marriage and business partnership testify to the power of their union and the strength of their mutual support. Philip and Madlena have remained heart-to-heart and shoulder-to-shoulder, supporting each other every step of the way through all the peaks and valleys of life.
