In roles that reflect her versatility and ability to embody a broad spectrum of characters\u2014from strong, complex women to gentler and more vulnerable ones\u2014she brings true authenticity and a striking impression to everything she does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At her home theater, the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, she completed her work in March on the play \u201cCrime and Punishment\u201d by F.M. Dostoevsky, directed by Jernej Lorenci, and before the end of the theater season, she faces another major project: the play \u201cThe Years\u201d by Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux, directed by Belgrade-based director Jovana Tomi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How are you generally drawn to a project you\u2019re working on?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For an actor, just receiving an offer is already a big deal. In addition, it\u2019s very important that when you accept a project, you don\u2019t do it just because it\u2019s a job. Sure, when you\u2019re young, it\u2019s not like that\u2014you\u2019re still building yourself\u2014but as you get older you\u2019re still building, but as you get older, motivation becomes very important. What usually motivates me is the script, then the director, and only after that\u2014my role within the project as a whole. Both big and small roles matter equally to me if I feel they\u2019re appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve just finished Crime and Punishment, and The Years. Two big projects in a short time. Do you let go of a role quickly so you can fully commit to the next one?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a play is finished, it continues to live its own life. After the premiere, it goes into a drawer in your brain, where it stays as long as the play is in the repertoire. And when its stage life ends, it disappears from that drawer instantly, freeing up space for a new performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What was the process like working on Crime and Punishment? During rehearsals, everything seemed smooth, beautiful, almost like a meditative environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just getting a role in that classic evokes a deep sense of reverence. I think everyone entered the project very humbly because you can slip on every page of the novel. It was a huge job for playwright Dino Pe\u0161ut and director Jernej Lorenci\u2014they had their framework, but we shaped the details together and explored where the story wanted to take us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Have you ever turned down a role or a job?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course I have. Sometimes because I physically couldn\u2019t fit it into my schedule, and other times because it just didn\u2019t suit the phase of life I was in. If I have time, I\u2019ll take on any project where I see even the tiniest spark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And how do I turn down offers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I generally handle it diplomatically&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What would you say was your big moment on stage?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the 1986\/87 season, in Paolo Magelli\u2019s first direction at Gavella Theater, in the play \u201cThe Mad Days.\u201d And on television, it was the film \u201cTwo Loves\u201d by Van\u010da Kljakovi\u0107\u2014that was when TV dramas were being produced on a large scale. Those were key early moments, when I was still at the Academy. Then everything began to roll\u2014an invitation from \u201cTeatar u gostima,\u201d then ZKM, and then the first big film&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Every profession comes with its own struggles, doubts, and dilemmas. How do you, as an actress, deal with inner turmoil?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With great difficulty. What I\u2019ve realized in these 36 years is that actors are incredibly vulnerable. And that vulnerability is constant. Even if you have a track record, you still have to prove your ability again and again. The stage is absolutely unforgiving in that sense\u2014even an audience that loves you can be unforgiving. You have to learn how to survive the anxiety that comes with not acting, but also the anxiety that arises when you\u2019re working too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both too much and too little work can be difficult\u2014it can even leave physical consequences sometimes. Actors today are very aware that the comfortable times for our profession are long gone\u2014when one could easily and steadily live out an acting career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9312-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9312-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9312-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9312-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9312.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s easier and more secure if you have permanent employment in one of our theater ensembles, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definitely. But today there\u2019s an overproduction of actors, and it\u2019s hard to stand out. Also, it seems to me that the love for a specific actor has faded\u2014especially in terms of how they\u2019re paid or valued as irreplaceable. Today, nobody really feels special anymore. And younger generations will soon become aware of this, they\u2019ll have to fight much harder for themselves, and we\u2019ll see more freelancers than permanently employed actors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Too many or too few projects\u2014both leave their mark, don\u2019t they?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No doubt about it\u2014it\u2019s always better to be working. Not working, for us actors, is somewhat shameful, uncomfortable\u2026 If an actor doesn\u2019t feel like part of a team, especially in large ensembles, it can be devastating. That sense of belonging is really important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How can an actor help themselves during times without work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During those periods, I read a lot, went to see other plays\u2026 Recently, I spoke to a colleague who said that during such times, she was even afraid to go out in public, worried someone might ask what she was working on. She only went to the theatre as an audience member, congratulated her colleagues\u2014to lift herself up\u2026 And she said it worked well. I did the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is a big ego essential\u2014or harmful\u2014for actors?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depends on the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For you? Do you think you have too much or too little?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I used to think I had too little. Then I realized that might\u2019ve just been a form of false modesty. In the end, I decided I don\u2019t want to think about my ego at all. Sure, I know when it\u2019s bruised\u2014but overall, I try not to dwell on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There\u2019s a fine line between confidence and ego, isn\u2019t there?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who\u2019s confident is welcome. But that doesn\u2019t mean every confident person is also smart\u2014maybe they just have a big ego. On the other hand, someone could be confident, smart, have a big ego\u2014and still be excellent. Nothing is black and white. Then again, someone with a small ego might need to work on that, because it\u2019s often a sign of insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your take on today\u2019s film and TV production, especially with the flood of streaming platforms?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the big streaming services, one successful series generates enormous revenue. It\u2019s a massive machine, so people are fighting just to write scripts for Netflix or similar platforms\u2014just to break into the business that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you watch any of the streaming platforms yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course I do. When I have the time, I can\u2019t stop watching them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How do you balance\u2014and how have you balanced\u2014your artistic sensibility with commercial interests?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve agreed to all sorts of things\u2026 But when I work on different projects, I try to switch genres and styles. At one point, I did three dramas in a row, and then I was invited to do a children\u2019s play. And working on it\u2014it was like I was healed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can you recall a time in your life when you had to make a very difficult professional decision?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be honest, I\u2019ve never really had to make hard professional choices. The only thing is that in the past fifteen years, due to being overworked, I\u2019ve had to stop and slow down three times\u2014just to catch my breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Are you the most sought-after Croatian actress today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, no\u2026 I\u2019m not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is there some research or statistic? How do you know you\u2019re not?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, there are actresses today who work more than I do&#8230; But I can say that at one time I really did work an incredible amount and was in very high demand. For example, at the 2016 Pula Film Festival, I had five films showing! It feels impossible even to me\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9349-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4455\" style=\"width:800px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9349-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9349-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9349-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9349-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/symbol-quorum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MG_9349.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Years and years of work, and yet your motivation seems unchanged?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I always want to keep going\u2014I always want more! I can\u2019t allow myself to treat this like just some regular job I define. It\u2019s a calling\u2014it pulls me in, it interests and inspires me. Because if that\u2019s no longer the case, maybe it\u2019s time to change professions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where do you find joy today, both privately and professionally?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Privately, I find joy in coffee, a cigarette, television, relaxing on the couch, and maybe taking a walk. Professionally, in working with great people and being part of quality projects\u2014like Crime and Punishment. That was a true little artistic exploration&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professionally speaking, I really consider myself a lucky woman. I\u2019ve worked on a lot of beautiful things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Would you agree with the idea that some of the greatest artists are also the most humble people? Since we\u2019re on the subject\u2014we\u2019d say you belong in that category too&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fulfilled and working person has no need to pretend to be something they\u2019re not. But there are all kinds of us\u2014some more humble, some less, some this way, some that. There are brilliant individuals who are very difficult to work with, who can be quite unbearable in some ways\u2014but they work professionally and beautifully, so you forgive them everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The media love you. You\u2019ve done hundreds of interviews\u2014but dealing with the media is a skill, isn\u2019t it? What advice would you give young actors about that aspect of the job, which becomes inevitable once they gain some recognition?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d tell them, first of all: don\u2019t let it get out of control. I\u2019ve always stuck to the idea that I give interviews when I have something professional to say\u2014when there\u2019s a reason for it. I\u2019d advise them to speak about the concrete work they\u2019re doing, about things they know. Not to talk too much about their private life. The key, really, is to find a good balance between professional and personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What would you tell young actors about how to handle media attention?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d tell them, first of all, not to let it get out of control. I\u2019ve always stuck to the rule of giving interviews only when I have something professional to share\u2014when there\u2019s a real reason. I\u2019d advise them to talk about concrete things they\u2019re involved in and knowledgeable about; not to talk too much about their private lives. Basically, it\u2019s important to find a healthy balance between the personal and the professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You\u2019re entering a new chapter in life\u2014you\u2019re going to be a grandmother. What are your expectations for that role?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just that everything goes well&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you already imagine yourself as a hands-on grandma, a \u201cbabysitting grandma\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll definitely be a grandma who takes care of both the children and the dogs\u2014as much as I have time for. I\u2019ve even started turning down some things because I\u2019ll soon need to start \u201cbabysitting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What would your reflection be on your career so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026And now the end is near\u2026\u201d No, no, I\u2019m just joking\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how I see it: I\u2019ve managed to accomplish a few significant things, starting with the fact that I\u2019ve worked with wonderful people and consistently found myself among the best of the best. That\u2019s been a huge stroke of luck in my life\u2014especially since it started happening early on, right from my time at the Academy.Second, I didn\u2019t lose my mind when I wasn\u2019t working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And third\u2014it really matters who you\u2019re surrounded by, because that shapes your growth. Some situations in our profession can truly be harmful. What matters is being in an environment that supports your work and progress.
